New Job - Day 3 check-in

So it's day three of the new job and the consensus is..... I think I'm going to like it here! Granted, there are a bunch of things that make me go "aaw, maan" (like their payschedule - the 15th and end of the month? WTF?) but for the most part, I'm doing really well.

I'm happy to report that it is all (THANKFULLY) coming back to me pretty quickly. I only have to make minor adjustments for new technology and procedures that have come about in the 1.5 years since I've been out of the PAC world, and I'm confident that it'll soon be routine.

I hate the first few days/weeks at a new job. I am TERRIBLE with names and faces, and this place doesn't have an up to date listing of who is here, who is where, and what they do. So I am bumbling my way through the day, alternately hiding out here in my office, and making "please God don't let it be obvious I have no idea who you are" chit-chat. I am OK with the folks on the 1st floor - there's a whole, new scary basement full of people for me to learn!

My colleague that I am supporting has a nice, lengthy laundry list of things/projects that I am inheriting. This week I am sending out thank you letters to all donors beginning 1 Jan 08. I will be in Mail Merge Hell (something close to 1,000 people?), but at least I will begin to see the names and familiarize myself with our membership.

Georgetown is nice, it's almost like Old Town Alexandria. Rather quiet, compared to the deafening sirens all over Downtown DC. I was so excited to see that there is a DC public library the next block over - until I remembered that it burned down last year? :( Bummer!!!!!

(BTW: I just looked up online to see exactly when the library burned down and saw this line from a WaPo article: Rubin said it wasn't clear whether the fact that the two closest fire hydrants were not working had been a stumbling block for firefighters. Ya think?!!? Oh man, now I have to worry about non-working fire hydrants AND exploding manholes?)

Well I have to go get on that mail merge pull.... back with updates soon! :)

So glad things are going well for you! I'm sure you'll be up to speed and know the names and faces in no time.
