Our night at The Lion King

This weekend, we went to the Kennedy Center to see the Disney's The Lion King. And it. was. AWESOME. Oh my God, I don't know if it was hormones, or my sentimentality, or just a deeper understanding of the song now that I'm no longer a teenager, but during the show opening of "The Circle of Life", all the lights and sounds and sights brought me to tears.

The show was truly amazing. I had seen it in NY during my Senior Year as part of my Yearbook Class Trip, and had been telling Justin all these years since how awesome the show was, so I was psyched to be able to take him and share it with him. We ended up scoring fantastic seats off Craig's List, paying more than face value, but it was SO worth the extra money.

Words simply cannot do it justice, nor am I anywhere near poetic enough to describe the show, but I'll try. The actors totally captured the spirit of the animals with their every move, a slink here, a lunge there. The mix of dancers, puppets, costumes and scenery brought the show to vivid, breathing life. Every subtle nuance was incorporated into the show so well that you almost began to take them for granted.

I remember looking over at Justin midway through the show, worrying that he might be bored, and he had the most wondrous look on his face. Mission accomplished. :)

There were many fun little moments throughout the night. Since it was the Kennedy Center, we went for mid-line dressy - a dress and heels for me, shirt and tie for Justin - and the rest of the people ranged from sweatsuits and shorts to 3 piece suits and fur coats. There was one family who had two little boys, about age 4 and 7? who were all pimped out to the extreme: matching mohawks and black pinstriped suits. They were SO HANDSOME, they got many admiring comments from the ladies. (Except this lady, who turned to Justin and said "did one of those boys have an 'E' shaved into his mohawk?" He did.) During the scene where Mufasa dies, the whole theater was silent - until from a few rows back, a little voice asked "what happened?" Yeah, good luck explaining that one, Dad... We had taken our glasses of wine to the top of the KenCen to see the views, when an older gentleman approached us. He said "excuse me, but I'm the official photographer for the evening, and it looks like you two need a picture". We were floored - what a sweet guy! So we cheesed for a photo and thanked him profusely.

And I cried again when the show closed with the final rendition of "The Circle of Life".

A few photos from our night. The pix turned out kind of weird because it was that kind of odd stormy dusk so the light was all fuzzy... the automatic flash setting wouldn't allow us to turn the flash on when we needed it.

Photography was forbidden during the show, but I managed to snap a couple of pix of the exhibit showing the masks of Mufasa, Scar and Zazu:
